Description: Boys from Latino and Native communities are disproportionately exposed to violence in childhood, and social and historical trauma has made them more vulnerable to continuing cycles of violence as older youth and adults. This webinar will explore the world of Latino and Native men and boys as it relates to their experiences of violence across the lifespan. The benefits of culturally-specific, self-generated, healing-informed approaches to restoring and sustaining healthy behaviors and healthy communities across generations will be explored.
Learning Objectives: As a result of the webinar participants will:
· Recognize the importance of understanding the varied experiences of violence in the lives of Latino and Native boys and men.
· Understand how social/historical trauma has contributed to use of violence by men and older boys in these communities.
· Support program design that promotes restoration of one’s true cultural identity as the foundation for the well-being of Latino and Native individuals, families and communities.
Presenter: Jerry Tello comes from a family of Mexican, Texan roots and was raised in South Central Los Angeles. He is an internationally recognized expert in the areas of fatherhood, family strengthening, community peace and mobilization and culturally based violence prevention/intervention. Over the last 30 thirty years Mr. Tello has dedicated his work to preventing and healing the pain of relationship/community violence, teen pregnancy, fatherless-ness and internalized oppression. He is co-founder of the National Compadres Network and the present Director of the National Latino Fatherhood and Family Institute. He has appeared in Time, Newsweek, Latina and Lowrider magazines. He has received the Presidential Crime Victims Service award, two California Governor’s Awards for violence prevention and intervention advocacy work and the Ambassador of Peace award from Rotary International.
