The burden of mental illness in the United States is among the highest of all diseases. Combined with the serious impact on physical health, mental health disorders can have harmful and long-lasting effects not only on those living with the disorders, but also on their loved ones and communities. This is a particularly important issue among American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Youth suicide rates in these communities are disproportionately higher than the national average.

Join the "Who's Leading the Leading Health Indicators?" webinar on May 23 as experts discuss the issue of mental illness. The 45-minute webinar will be led by Dr. Don Wright, HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. The webinar will feature the success of the White Mountain Apache tribe in using data-driven decisions and interventions to address youth suicide.

Suicide is a serious public health problem that affects individuals in various life stages. For youth between the ages of 10 and 24, suicide is the third leading cause of death. It results in approximately 4,600 lives lost each year.

Suicides and suicide-related behaviors have a profound toll on American Indian and Alaska Native individuals and communities, particularly among their youth. The suicide rate among American Indian/Alaska Native adolescents and young adults ages 15 to 34 (31 per 100,000) is 2.5 times higher than the national average for that age group (12.2 per 100,000).

Join us on Thursday, May 23, at 12:00 PM EDT as we highlight how one Tribe has been successful in using data to drive decisions and interventions for addressing youth suicide.. This 45-minute Webinar will be led by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Deputy Assistant Secretary for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Dr. Don Wright, and will include a roundtable discussion on the impact of this critical Leading Health Indicator topic.
